Department of Medicine was established in the year 1990. Department of Medicine has grown under the able and devoted guidance of Dr. A.G. Srinivasa Murthy who has been heading the department for the past 9 Yrs. He is being assisted by dynamic, enthusiastic professors like Dr. Basappa, Dr. Sharath D. Shah, Dr. Muddurangappa Dr. M.Shalini and other young energetic assistants.
The department is proud of its Cardiology unit in which TMT and Echocardiogram are done, which cater the needs of rural population at lowest cost. Department of Medicine has a separate cardiac care unit and Critical care unit with mechanical ventilation and the doctors are taking care of the patients 24 hrs a day.  
Apart from routine OPD department of Medicine runs special clinics like Diabetic Clinic, Hypertension Clinic, Epilepsy Clinic and HIV Clinic. 
Department of Medicine is a close associate of medical education unit of SSMC, which conducts regular CME programmes, guest lectures, training of teachers etc., The Department has Postgraduate Students from the year 1999.
