SSMC has a well established, well equipped and staffed department of ophthalmology. At SSMC Hospital and District Hospital Tumkur, Department is rendering academic, clinical and community services. Both UG and PG education and training is imparted. High academic standards are being maintained. The performance of UG and PG students has been excellent. High quality patient care is being provided both to urban and rural population. In addition, the department is participating in National programme for control of blindness by conducting both screening and operative camps. Full fledged eye bank is being established shortly.  

Department has facilities for high tech modern micro surgery. Under the able leadership of Dr.G.K.G.Prasad and guidance of eminent surgeon like Dr. Thimmaiah the team is performing highly skilled surgeries like Cataract, IOC, Glaucoma, lid Surgeries, Sac surgeries. Department has good operating microscope ( Carlzeie & Takagi ) slit lamps, Ultra Scan, Bolometer, keratometer, Phaco eunalsification system, fundus camera and audiography unit, Automated field analyzer – octopus system. Special clinic like cornea, Glaucoma, retina refraction, squint and contract lens are functioning.
